  Michael McArdle, a 37-year-old man from Longford, pleaded guilty to 35 charges of theft and one charge of unauthorised use of a computer after direct debits totalling €113,813.40 were taken from Viking Direct's AIB account between 9 July and 4 September 2018. The money was routed through his online company Synergy Education, then to an escrow account, then to his mother Anne McArdle's Permanent TSB account, and finally to accounts in his own name. At Galway Circuit Court on 5 December 2024, Judge Eoin Garavan described the fraud as entirely sophisticated, pre-meditated, and very carefully thought out and said it warrants a custodial sentence. The judge adjourned sentencing to 26 June 2025 to hear sworn psychiatric evidence.
