  Michael Galvin, a 34-year-old man from Macroney, Kilworth, Co Cork, was sentenced at Cork Circuit Criminal Court in November 2024 to two years' imprisonment with the last six months suspended after pleading guilty to assaulting his ex-girlfriend and making threats against her. Between 14 and 15 January 2023 at his home, Galvin threw a lighter at the woman's forehead causing a lesion, punched her in the ribs, grabbed a broom and threatened to smash her car, threatened to throw her into a septic tank to shut her mouth and bury her, and threatened to destroy the home of her parents. The court noted his 48 previous convictions, all at district court level, and his history of bi-polar disorder and suicidal attempts as aggravating factors, while the guilty plea was treated as a mitigating factor as it spared the woman the ordeal of giving evidence at trial.
