latest first- Former bank boss facing civil trial over €290m in loans
Michael Fingleton, the 86-year-old former boss of Irish Nationwide Building Society, is facing a civil trial over €290m in loans he gave out. The case was first launched in 2012 by liquidators of the State-owned Irish Bank Resolution Corporation after Irish Nationwide failed during the financial crash. His lawyers argued he was incapable of giving evidence after suffering a stroke five years ago, but the Supreme Court ruled in December 2024 that the trial can proceed, supporting earlier High Court and Court of Appeal decisions. The civil trial is expected to take place in 2025.
