• Man with 231 convictions to serve full prison term after Court of Appeal rejects sentence appeal Assault · Co. Dublin

Michael Farrell, reported as 31 or 32 years old with 231 previous convictions, committed offences in Dublin between 2020 and 2022. These included possessing a realistic imitation firearm at his home in Montpelier Gardens, Dublin 7, on 9 October 2020, threatening a garda at Cloverhill Prison on 3 March 2021, and assaulting two prison officers at Mountjoy Prison on 10 March 2022. He pleaded guilty to all charges and was sentenced at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court in December 2023 to six years with the final six months suspended, which one report gives as five and a half years. He appealed the sentence as excessive, the Court of Appeal heard the appeal on 12 July 2024 and reserved judgment, and on 17 July 2024 it rejected the appeal, so he will serve his full term in prison.
