On the afternoon of June 21, 2021, in Kilmeaden, Co Waterford, Michael Delaney, 36, a man of Barrett Place, Doyle Street, Waterford, dragged a man from his car, punched him repeatedly in the head and body, and threw him against the car, the road, and a ditch, leaving the man with broken teeth, vision problems, and constant ringing in the ears. Delaney was arrested at the scene and later pleaded guilty to unlawful seizure of a vehicle, assault causing harm, violent disorder, and driving offences. In June 2022, Waterford Circuit Criminal Court sentenced him to three years' imprisonment. The State has appealed the sentences at the Central Criminal Court, arguing they are unduly lenient, and the three-judge court has reserved its judgment.

On 30 August 2019, Michael Delaney, an assistant chief officer in Limerick Prison, was bitten and head-butted by a prisoner while attempting to restrain him, sustaining a right shoulder injury that required surgery. He was out of work until spring 2020. In October 2019 he requested the incident be treated as an occupational injury, but the prison service refused on 31 October 2019 and upheld the refusal on appeal in December 2019. Delaney brought High Court proceedings in May 2020 against the prison service, the Minister for Justice and the State. In November 2021, Ms Justice Niamh Hyland quashed the prison service's decision, finding a failure to provide reasons, and remitted the matter for further consideration.
