latest first- Coroner records misadventure verdict in baby dog attack death, Waterford Death (animal attack) · Co. Waterford
Mia O'Connell, a three-month-old baby girl, was killed by a family dog named Red at a house in Clashmore, Waterford, on 6 June 2021. The terrier Dachshund cross was found standing over the infant, who had been born premature on 22 February 2021 to Ella Wood and Rhys O'Connell. The dog had previously shown signs of aggression towards the baby and was kept outside the property in a kennel. An inquest at Cork Coroner's Court in January 2023 heard that Mia died of a traumatic brain injury from scalp lacerations consistent with an animal attack. Coroner Philip Comyn recorded a verdict of misadventure and urged dog owners with young children to exercise extreme caution.
