On 7 August 2023 a Kilkenny man, the injured party, received a text message saying his bank account had been compromised. After he clicked a link and followed its directions, €2,000 was taken from his account and lodged into an account held by Megan Carey, a 51-year-old woman, who transferred the money on to another account. On 18 March 2025 Carey appeared before Kilkenny District Court charged with money laundering over her part in the phone text scam and pleaded guilty. The judge told her she would leave the court with a conviction, gave her time to engage with the Probation Service and gather repayment money, and adjourned the matter to a court sitting on 13 May.
