Maurice Magner, a 44-year-old man formerly of Killavullen, Co Cork, was found guilty of coercive control, two counts of rape, one count of oral rape, two counts of anal rape and three counts of sexual assault committed between 2019 and 2021 at an address in Waterford. The court heard that Magner controlled the woman's life, including removing light bulbs, disconnecting the heating, restricting her clothing and not allowing visitors. Judge Tony Hunt sentenced Magner to 17 years in prison at the Central Criminal Court, indicating the final two years would be suspended if he agreed to a no-contact bond. Magner refused to enter the bond twice and the case was adjourned for him to return and enter it. He has been in custody since 19 January of this year.
