Maurice Kiernan, 28, of Killane Drive, Edenderry, was charged with possession of heroin and having it for sale or supply after a front seat passenger in a Ford Fiesta driven by his wife Lisa Kiernan threw an item from the car on School Lane, Edenderry, on 16 March 2020. Garda O'Mahony recovered a package from the scene near the Derry Rovers pitch. Kiernan pleaded not guilty to two counts under the Misuse of Drugs Act. His trial at Tullamore Circuit Court began on 10 December 2021 but collapsed the following day after a garda witness gave evidence the judge deemed prejudicial. Judge Keenan Johnson indicated he would recuse himself in any retrial.
