Maureen McCormack, 53, a former Bank of Ireland employee from Esker, Banagher, Co Offaly, is accused of stealing almost €200,000 from the Banagher branch and its customers before attempting to set the building on fire on 6 October 2021. She was arrested two days later and charged with nine offences at Tullamore District Court, to which she pleaded guilty for the arson and three theft charges. In October 2024, Judge Keenan Johnson at Tullamore Circuit Court sentenced her to 240 hours of community service for the arson and a four-year prison term suspended for six years for one theft charge. The DPP applied for a review of the sentence as unduly lenient, and the court reserved its judgment in October 2025.
