A 58-year-old woman, Maureen Hickey, was sentenced at Newcastle West District Court on 5 December 2025 for an 18-month campaign of harassment against garda sergeant Rosealeen O'Connor. The offending began after Ms Hickey was struck by a vehicle in a road collision near her home and she was dissatisfied with the outcome of the garda investigation, which did not result in a prosecution. She sent eleven letters, made derogatory comments on public Facebook pages, and repeatedly phoned garda stations and contacted the sergeant's family. The judge applied the Probation Act, meaning Ms Hickey will not receive a criminal conviction.
