Matthew Telford, 32, a man from Downpatrick, Co Down, assaulted his then-partner in their room at the Carlton Hotel in Tyrrelstown, Dublin, on the evening of 13 August 2019 after an argument over the air conditioning. He grabbed her by the hair, threw her to the floor, and slapped and kicked her legs, causing her to trip and badly break her wrist, which later required surgery to insert steel wires. The woman made a statement to Gardaí several weeks later, at which point Telford confessed, and he pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court. In January 2023, Judge Martin Nolan handed Telford a two-year fully-suspended prison sentence, conditional on him paying the woman €4,000 immediately and a further €5,000 over two years.
