Matthew O'Connell, a 75-year-old man formerly of Adare, County Limerick, raped his wife's younger sister repeatedly between July 1979 and June 1987, when she was aged 13 to 21. She told her family in the 1990s by one account, began counselling in 2017, and reported the abuse to gardaí in 2021. O'Connell pleaded not guilty and was convicted on 42 charges of rape at the Central Criminal Court. On 30 July 2025 Mr Justice Kerida Naidoo sentenced him to 12 years in prison, from a headline sentence of 15 years.
