  Matthew Lynch, a 30-year-old man from Buncrana, Co Donegal, demanded a lift home from gardaí when they were approached at about 4.18am on May 4, 2025, on Upper Main Street, and was arrested for his own safety. He was charged under the Public Order Act and, at Buncrana District Court in April 2026, pleaded guilty to a Section 4 offence of public drunkenness. The judge ruled the charge would be struck out if he donated €500 to a charity fundraiser, and that otherwise a conviction would be recorded with a €500 fine. The matter was adjourned to June 11 for proof of payment.
