  On 24 April 2024 at Rassan, Hackballcross, Dundalk, Co Louth, Matthew King (25) strangled his pregnant partner, a woman eight months pregnant, beat her with an iron bar, locked her in a caravan toilet and poured bleach and heating oil over her head. Gardaí were looking for him until he presented at Dundalk Garda Station in March 2025. He pleaded guilty at Dundalk Circuit Court to non-fatal strangulation, assault causing harm, false imprisonment and production of a metal bar. He was sentenced to six years in prison, backdated to 15 March 2025, with a no-contact order and 18 months post-release supervision, as reported in February 2026.
