Matthew Grogan, a 26-year-old man from Swords, Co Dublin, was sentenced in May 2024 to three years and nine months in prison for driving a stolen taxi in a high-speed pursuit that spanned Co Louth and Co Dublin. Between 22 and 23 September 2021, Grogan allegedly drove the stolen vehicle at speeds up to 170 km/h, colliding with two Garda ASU vehicles before being arrested by armed gardaí in the Swords area. He was charged with possession of stolen property, trespassing, criminal damage, driving without insurance, and dangerous driving, and was denied bail at Dublin District Court in September 2021. Grogan pleaded guilty to all charges at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court, where the judge noted his 64 previous convictions, addiction issues, and difficult childhood. He was also disqualified from driving for two years.
