On 21 December 2024, Danny O'Donoghue, 43, of Rathkeale, Co Limerick, drove a silver Ford Transit van into a set of steel gates at Bank Place, Well Lane, Rathkeale, killing his 21-year-old niece Marguerita O'Rourke (née Sheridan), who had given birth to her first child three weeks earlier. O'Donoghue was arrested on 23 December 2024 and charged with dangerous driving causing death, criminal damage, producing a machete, and threatening to kill or cause serious harm. He pleaded guilty to four of the charges at Limerick Circuit Criminal Court in July 2025. On 21 January 2026, Judge Colin Daly sentenced him to five and a half years in prison with the final six months suspended, a concurrent two and a half year sentence for producing the machete, and a seven-year driving ban.
