  • O'Brien appeals rape and sexual assault conviction in Dublin Rape and sexual assault · Co. Dublin

Richard O'Brien, 64, was convicted by a jury in 2023 of 63 counts of rape, sexual assault and indecent assault against five victims, including his two sisters, his niece, and his two daughters. The abuse took place at the family home on O'Moore Road, Ballyfermot, Dublin, between 1975 and 2011. He was sentenced to life in prison in May 2023 for the rape offences against his daughters, with concurrent sentences totalling 11 years for the other offending. O'Brien is now appealing his conviction, arguing that the use of video-link evidence for the victims created a risk of unfairness. The judge reserved judgment on the appeal, to be delivered on Thursday.

  • Son granted High Court permission over unsolved Louth murders Murder · Co. Louth

Dominic McGlinchey Snr, chief of staff of the INLA, was shot dead by two gunmen at a phone box in Drogheda, Co Louth, on 10 February 1994, and his wife Mary McGlinchey was shot nine times in her home in Dundalk, Co Louth, on 31 January 1987. Both murders remain unsolved, with no one charged, convicted or arrested. Their son Dominic 'Og' McGlinchey, who was 16 at the time of his father's killing, has brought High Court judicial review proceedings claiming the State failed to properly investigate the killings. Justice Niamh Hyland granted him permission to bring both actions on an ex parte basis, and the cases will return before the High Court in October.
