  • Garda Commissioner admits 1990 rape victim Mary McCarthy not treated properly in Co. Mayo case Rape · Co. Mayo

Mary McCarthy alleges that a priest raped her twice in Co Mayo in 1990, with the first incident alleged to have occurred in March 1990 and the second in Castlebar while she was hitching a lift. The Director of Public Prosecutions refused to take her claims to trial in early 2006, and declined to charge the priest again after a 2022 garda review had recommended charges. The detective who investigated the case had himself been sued by a woman who claimed he raped her, and the priest was never arrested for questioning before the file went to the DPP. In November 2025 Garda Commissioner Justin Kelly met Ms McCarthy and told her she was not treated the way she should have been as a victim, a meeting reported on 24 December 2025.
