    In August 2022 a woman holidaying in Spain received a text purporting to be from An Post, clicked a link and gave her Bank of Ireland details, and €27,000 was then taken from her account in one transaction and moved into the account of Mary Maughan (39) of Dun Laoghaire, Dublin. Maughan said a Facebook contact had offered her €400 for the use of her account, and cash was withdrawn from cash machines and foreign exchanges while two men drove her around the city. The bank returned the money to the victim in full but remains at a loss of €20,000. Maughan pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to processing the proceeds of crime through her account, contrary to the Money Laundering Act, and at her sentence hearing on 1 December 2025 the judge ordered a Probation Service assessment and remanded her on continuing bail to 24 April.
