latest first- No new investigation into 1976 murder, rape, false imprisonment in Wicklow Murder · Co. Wicklow
Elizabeth Plunkett, a 23-year-old woman from Ringsend, Dublin, was abducted, raped and murdered near Brittas Bay, Co Wicklow, in August 1976, and a month later Mary Duffy was kidnapped and murdered by the same men in Conamara, Co Galway. British men John Shaw, 79, and Geoffrey Evans, who died in custody in 2012, were arrested in Galway in September 1976 and charged with murder, rape and false imprisonment of both women. Shaw was convicted of Mary Duffy's murder but was never convicted of Elizabeth Plunkett's murder, a fact revealed during his 2023 parole application. The Plunkett family has campaigned to reopen the case, but no new Garda investigation or cold case review has been launched, and Shaw is expected to apply for parole again in early 2026.
