Gearoid Coughlan, 31, was charged with the attempted murder of his mother Mary Coughlan after he repeatedly stabbed her with a knife at their family home in Ballycoughlan, Bandon, Co Cork on 4 June 2021, causing a 25cm neck wound, multiple facial wounds and a traumatic brain injury. The earlier assault charge was withdrawn at Bandon District Court on 25 August 2021 and the DPP directed charges of attempted murder and intentionally and recklessly causing serious harm. Coughlan pleaded guilty to the attempted murder and was sentenced at the Central Criminal Court in March 2024 to ten years in prison, with the final two years of a 12-year sentence suspended for six years under strict conditions.

On 9 January 2021, Darren Carton, a 42-year-old man from Kilmacanogue, Co Wicklow, burgled the home of blues singer Mary Coughlan at Barchuilla Commons, Kilmacanogue, and caused €4,000 worth of criminal damage to a sliding door. Coughlan's son-in-law Ciarán Farrelly and partner John Kelly confronted the intruder, who threatened them with a knife before escaping after a brief struggle. Carton was identified from a phone video and a fingerprint left on a parked vehicle during the confrontation. He was found guilty of burglary and criminal damage following a seven-day jury trial at Wicklow Circuit Criminal Court in December 2022, and acquitted of a charge of threatening to kill Farrelly. Judge Patrick Quinn sentenced him to six years in prison with the final year suspended, backdated after he had spent over 18 months in custody.
