Cases
latest first- Midlands farmer appeals conviction for importing €730,000 of drugs Importation of a controlled drug and having drugs for sale or supply · Co. Offaly
Martin Murray, aged 58, 59 or 60 according to differing reports, was stopped while driving an articulated lorry at Dunkerrin on 30 June 2017, where gardaí found 73 packages of cannabis worth €730,000 hidden in steel tubes. He was arrested on 5 July 2017 and charged on 25 October 2018, and he denied importing the drugs and having them for sale or supply. A jury at Tullamore Circuit Court returned a unanimous guilty verdict, and on 19 December 2023 he was sentenced to 10 years with the final two suspended, a term some reports give as eight years with two suspended, backdated to 4 May 2023. He appealed the conviction in June 2025, arguing that garda evidence should not have gone to the jury, and reports in January 2026 said the Court of Appeal had reserved judgment.
