On the morning of 25 August 2024, a two-car collision occurred at Inver Glebe, Inver, Co Donegal, when an Austrian man drove on the wrong side of the road for 300 metres and his Dacia Jogger struck head-on a Volkswagen Up. Elizabeth Cave, an 89-year-old woman from Donegal Town, was taken to Sligo University Hospital and died on 28 August; two other people were also injured. Martin Mittmannsgruber, 52, of Wartberg, Austria, was arrested and charged with dangerous driving causing death on 28 August 2024, appeared at Letterkenny District Court the following day, and was sent forward for trial to Donegal Circuit Court in December 2025. He affirmed a guilty plea in December 2025 and was sentenced in June 2026 to a 12-month prison term suspended for 12 months and a four-year driving disqualification.
