On the afternoon of 20 August 2025 on Lower Main Street, Letterkenny, Co Donegal, three men were reported trying to gain access to a car in what was described as an attempted hijacking, and gardaí said the incident was connected with a family feud. Martin McCarthy, a 36-year-old man, was arrested after footage of the incident was widely shared on social media, and on 4 September 2025 he appeared at Letterkenny District Court, where bail was refused and the case was adjourned to 15 September. He was charged with a public order offence and criminal damage, and in February 2026 he pleaded guilty at Letterkenny Circuit Court to four charges: violent disorder, criminal damage, possession of MDMA for unlawful sale or supply, and money laundering. The latest development is that the judge requested a probation report on his suitability for community service and remanded him in custody at Castlerea Prison until the next Circuit Court session in May.
