  On the night of 22/23 December 2022, Martin Gooney, 27, trespassed at the home of a 40-year-old woman in Whitegate, Co Clare, and during a struggle bit her on the right buttocks and right shoulder after pulling her out the back door. The woman reported the incident to the Gardaí on 26 December 2022, and Gooney was charged with two counts of assault, one count of sexual assault, and one count of trespass, though the State did not proceed with the sexual assault charge. He pleaded guilty to the two assault counts and the trespass charge at Killaloe District Court sitting in Ennis in May 2024. In September 2024, Judge Alec Gabbett imposed two concurrent one-month prison terms, and Gooney was freed on bail pending an appeal to the circuit court.
