• Donegal man jailed for sexual abuse of two teenage girls Defilement and sexual assault · Co. Donegal

Martin Friel, a 47-year-old man from Fanad, Donegal, committed a series of sexual offences against two young girls between 2014 and 2016, some on his farm, in his jeep and in the victims' home. One victim complained to gardaí in December 2016, and Friel was arrested, interviewed three times and denied the allegations. He was initially charged with 26 offences, later pleaded guilty on a full facts basis on a scheduled trial date, and voluntarily went into custody on June 20 at a sentencing hearing before Judge John Aylmer. He was sentenced at Cavan Circuit Court to nine and a half years in prison, with the last 12 months suspended, a sentence reported in early July 2025.
