  Two men armed with iron bars allegedly assaulted postmistress Maura McKiernan at An Post Carrigaholt in west Clare on 21 January 2026, stealing cash, coins and a cheque worth €8,944.63. Four men, Martin Downes (36), Michael McMahon (38), Darren Cassidy (38) and Darragh Pender (31), were charged with robbery after being apprehended by the Garda Armed Response Unit following a high-speed car chase across west Clare. Cassidy, Pender and McMahon have entered guilty pleas at Ennis Circuit Court and are awaiting sentence on 10 November. Downes, who is alleged to have been a getaway driver, pleads not guilty and his trial is due in February 2027.
