latest first- Man sentenced to 17 years for rape of woman in Tralee Rape · Co. Kerry
Martin Burke, 28, formerly of Ballinorig Estate, Tralee, Co Kerry, pleaded guilty to four counts of rape, oral rape, anal rape and sexual assault of a woman at a location in Tralee on 18 December 2022. Burke grabbed the woman by the throat, dragged her to the ground, tried to strangle her, then pulled her by the hair into an alleyway and raped her. The woman was found in distress by two Gardaí on patrol and taken to a sexual assault treatment unit, where bruising on her neck and lower limbs and pine needles on her body were noted. Burke, who had 17 previous convictions and was on bail for similar offending, had been in custody since January 2023. On 14 February 2025, Mr Justice Tony Hunt at the Central Criminal Court sentenced him to 17 years, with the final two years suspended under strict conditions.

Martin Burke (26), a man, was convicted by a jury at the Central Criminal Court of three counts of sexual assault against two women and acquitted of one count, after pleading not guilty to four. The offences took place on the night of 26 August 2018 in County Kerry, at the end of a night out, when Burke followed the first woman to her room, bit her cheek and sexually assaulted her, and later grabbed the second woman's breast while she slept in a bedroom. Justice Paul McDermott sentenced him on 24 May 2023 to five and a half years, with the final 12 months suspended on condition of engaging with the Probation Service for three years after release, and ordered him to have no contact with the victims. Press reports gave the sentence as four and a half years.
