  Marlies Walsh, a 51-year-old woman from Clonakilty, Co Cork, contacted Dr. Atif Awan, a man, at Temple Street Hospital in Dublin by phone, in person and by letter between December 2017 and August 2020 while seeking to work as a patient advocate. She was charged with harassment in April 2020 and pleaded guilty on the first day of her jury trial at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court. In November 2022 she received a two-year suspended sentence and a 20-year order barring her from contacting or approaching the doctor. The Court of Appeal refused her appeal in November 2023, and the Supreme Court refused leave to appeal in May 2024.
