latest first- Man convicted of Dublin murder dies in Mountjoy Prison Death (unexplained circumstances) · Co. Dublin
Mark Whelan, 48, a man from Castlecurragh Heath, Mulhuddart, Dublin 15, stabbed Noel Whelan, 22, a man, 18 times at the victim's home on 30 March 2019 while high on cocaine, cannabis and benzodiazepines. Whelan left his home topless and covered in blood, went to his brother-in-law's home, then walked into Finglas Garda Station and told officers he was the one they wanted. He pleaded not guilty to murder, arguing he was psychotic through intoxication, but a unanimous jury at the Central Criminal Court found him guilty in October 2021. Ms Justice Tara Burns sentenced him to life in prison in December 2021, backdated to March 2019. Whelan died in May 2022 after falling ill in the showers at Mountjoy Prison, with Gardaí treating the death as unexplained and no foul play suspected.
