On 23 February 2023, gardaí stopped Marian Vavrek, a 48-year-old Slovakian man, near Shroid on the Dublin Road in Longford after he allegedly tried to evade a patrol car and swap seats with his passenger. He faced nine charges relating to driving without documentation and admitted to gardaí that he had no tax, insurance or NCT. He was on remand for another matter, to which he is pleading not guilty, and at Longford District Court Judge Bernadette Owens fined him €450 for no insurance and €250 for no driving licence and disqualified him from driving for two years, with five days in custody as the default. Marian Vavrek, a 46-year-old man with an address at 6 Chapel Lane Apartments, Edgeworthstown, was charged with driving without documentation and giving a false name to gardaí over incidents on April 9 at Main Street, Granard, and July 16 at Carrickboy Farm, Edgeworthstown, and he was also charged under the name Marek Varga. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced in Longford District Court, as reported on August 2, 2023, to a total of 10 months in two consecutive five-month terms, and he was remanded to Limerick and Fermoy District Courts to face revocation of suspended sentences. At a hearing reported on September 26, 2023, Judge Bernadette Owens considered an application for approval of a surety, offered by his sister, and told him the surety should be approved within 48 hours. He had been granted recognisance on his own €500 bond with an independent €5,000 surety, €3,000 of it to be lodged in cash.
