Trevor Bolger, a Garda officer, hit his then-wife Margaret Loftus, a former Garda, in the back and grabbed her by the hair at a family party in Co Mayo on 24 October 2012, after becoming irate that she spoke to her family rather than staying by his side. He was convicted of assault and handed a three-month fully suspended sentence in January 2026. Garda management issued a notice of dismissal on 6 May 2026, arguing it was necessary to maintain public confidence. The High Court granted a stay on the dismissal on 22 May 2026, with proceedings stayed until 14 July.

Trevor Bolger, 48, a garda, hit his then-wife Margaret Loftus, also a garda, in the back and grabbed her by the hair in her childhood bedroom in Balla, Co Mayo, on 25 October 2012 after a family event. The case only proceeded after Loftus wrote her own garda statement and sent it to the Garda Commissioner's Office in 2018, six years after the incident, and Bolger was charged in December 2019. He pleaded guilty to a section 2 assault at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court after more serious charges of threats to kill and coercion were dropped. In January 2026, Judge Martina Baxter gave Bolger a three-month sentence suspended in full on strict conditions, and the Garda Commissioner subsequently changed his suspension to without pay.
