A 24-year-old woman, Malaz Hibr, collected social welfare payments at Letterkenny Post Office during two periods in 2019 and 2020 and sent a total of €4,634 to her mother, Mashaier Idris, in Kazakhstan via Western Union. Hibr made admissions to Gardaí when they arrived at the post office. She was convicted of social welfare fraud at Letterkenny District Court in June 2022 and fined €750 with five months to pay. All payments had been fully reimbursed with no loss to the Department of Social Welfare.
