Karl Ronan, 55, a musician, was sentenced at the Central Criminal Court in May 2024 to six years for rape and a concurrent three years for indecent assault of his younger sister Lynn Ronan, 51. The abuse took place over four years from 1982 to 1986 in their family home in Dublin, near their grandmother's home in Laois, and in Galway. The garda investigation began after Lynn made a disclosure during a counselling session in 2018. Ronan pleaded guilty but had told gardaí in interview that the abuse was consensual. The final six months of his sentence were suspended on conditions including two years of Probation Service engagement and no contact with his sister.
