On 28 October 2023, a 10-year-old Jack Russell dog named Lucky was found bleeding and unresponsive in Dublin 10 after an untreated tumour the size of a grapefruit near his testicles ruptured. Martina Kelly, a mother of three from Ballyfermot Avenue, Kylemore, Dublin 10, said she could not get a vet appointment over the bank holiday weekend and had no car. A DSPCA inspector investigated three days later after Kelly called offering to surrender the dog, and the Department of Agriculture subsequently prosecuted her. Kelly pleaded guilty to charges under the Animal Health and Welfare Act at Dublin District Court and was sentenced on 2 December 2024 to six months' imprisonment with the final two months suspended.
