On 2 March 2024, Louay Kila, a 31-year-old Moroccan man and senior registrar at University Hospital Limerick, raped a nurse colleague while she was sleeping on a couch at a friend's apartment in Limerick City and continued sexually assaulting her after she told him to stop. Kila was arrested 20 days later and charged with rape and sexual assault, which he denied. A jury at the Central Criminal Court, sitting in Limerick, found him guilty of both counts on 5 March 2026 after a four-day trial. On 13 March 2026, Judge Sean Gillane sentenced Kila to eight years for the rape and a concurrent four-year term for the sexual assault, and ordered him placed on the sex offenders register.
