    John Dempsey snr, a 73-year-old man from Crumlin, Dublin 12, pleaded guilty to seven counts of raping his partner's niece, Lillian Byrne, at various locations in Dublin between 1980 and 1991, with grooming beginning when she was 12. Byrne made a statement to gardaí in 2021, and the case was heard at the Central Criminal Court. The judge set a headline sentence of 14 years, reduced to 10 years after mitigation, with the final year suspended on strict conditions, resulting in nine years in prison.
