On 24 February 2019, Tom Molloy, a 26-year-old man, fractured the eye socket of Liam Reilly during an off-the-ball incident in a Westmeath club football match between Shandonagh and Maryland. Molloy pleaded guilty to assault causing harm at Mullingar Circuit Criminal Court. Judge Keenan Johnson set a headline sentence of four years, reduced it to two years and six months, and suspended it on condition that Molloy did not reoffend within four years. Molloy was also ordered to pay €20,000 to Reilly within 12 months, and the GAA imposed a 24-week suspension on him.
