Liam Finlay, a 51-year-old man from Tullamore, Co. Offaly, sent handwritten messages to Gardaí stations, a secondary school and a college detailing plans to kidnap, rape, torture and murder young women and girls. Detectives traced stamps on the messages to a Tullamore post office and found a forest den covered in plastic with clippings of young women. Finlay admitted to charges at Tullamore Circuit Court, was refused bail, and was found guilty in 2018 of sending packages containing obscene material by post. As of 30 December 2025, he was reported to be due for release from Arbour Hill prison in six months.
