Liam Campbell, a 59-year-old man from Upper Faughart, Dundalk, Co Louth, is alleged to have made arrangements between the end of 2006 and 2007 to travel to Lithuania to acquire firearms and explosives, including automatic rifles, sniper guns, projectors, detonators, timers and TNT, to smuggle into Ireland while acting in the Real Irish Republican Army. He was first arrested in Northern Ireland in 2013 on a surrender warrant, but a Belfast court refused the first extradition request citing inhuman and degrading conditions in Lithuania. He was arrested again in Dundalk on 2 December 2016 on a second European Arrest Warrant, and both the High Court and Court of Appeal ordered his extradition. On 9 May 2022, the Supreme Court in Dublin dismissed his appeal and ruled he can be extradited to Lithuania, where he is expected to be surrendered in the coming days.
