In August 2016, Alan Hawe, 40, a vice principal at Castlerahan National School, murdered his wife Clodagh Hawe, 39, and their three sons Liam, 13, Niall, 11, and Ryan, 6, at their home in Ballyjamesduff, Co Cavan, before taking his own life. Hawe killed Clodagh with a hatchet, knife, and his bare hands in the sitting room, then slit the throats of his three sleeping sons. A 2019 Garda Review was critical of the initial investigation, noting that a secret phone, laptops, and other digital devices were destroyed before the review took place. In May 2025, Clodagh's sister Jacqueline Connolly released her memoir 'Deadly Silence' and appealed to Garda Commissioner Drew Harris to release the review findings as a matter of urgency.

On 21 June 2023, a crash between a jeep and a car on the N10 at Danesfort, Co Kilkenny, killed 13-year-old Billy Rockett and left his father Liam in serious condition in Mater Hospital, Dublin. Two occupants of the jeep were also taken to hospital for treatment of their injuries. Liam Rockett, of Milltown, Kilmacow, was charged with dangerous driving causing serious bodily harm. In April 2024, he was sent forward for trial on indictment to Kilkenny Circuit Court and remanded on continuing bail.
