Between June 18 and August 13, 2022, Lesley Dyer, a 40-year-old woman, stole €1,050 in two thefts from the Bray, Co Wicklow home of an elderly woman with dementia for whom she worked as a respite carer. After the family installed CCTV cameras when cash went missing, gardaí arrested Dyer at her home two days after the CCTV notification. Dyer pleaded guilty to two counts of theft at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court, where Judge Orla Crowe set a headline sentence of two years in prison. Citing mitigation including her early guilty plea, the judge ordered Dyer to complete 240 hours of community service in lieu of an 18-month prison sentence, as reported on November 3, 2023.
