latest first- Far-right plot to murder Leo Varadkar foiled by Gardaí Attempted murder (foiled) · Co. Dublin
Dublin Live reported on 17 July 2024 that Gardaí had foiled an alleged far-right plot to murder Leo Varadkar, with a group said to be obtaining guns for an assassination attempt. The articles place the threat in early 2022, which led Gardaí to mount an emergency security operation and reinstate his armed detail, while one account dates the plot to when he was Tánaiste after handing leadership to Michael Martin. The group reportedly abandoned the plan after seeing the extra protection, and no individual suspect is named and no arrest or charge is reported. The latest development is a high-level Garda review of ministerial security, in which doubling of protection is considered the most probable outcome.

In April 2019, Leo Varadkar, then Tánaiste, gave a copy of a proposed €210 million GP contract between the Department of Health and the Irish Medical Organisation to Dr Maitiú Ó Tuathail, then president of the National Association of General Practitioners. The matter was investigated by NCBI specialist officers, and both men were interviewed under caution in April 2021 and surrendered their mobile phones for examination. In April 2022, Gardaí confirmed the investigation file had been submitted to the DPP for consideration, with no recommendation made. The DPP will now decide whether any laws, such as the Official Secrets Act or the Criminal Justice Acts, may have been broken and whether criminal charges are to be preferred.
