Thomas Griffin, a 31-year-old man from Ballyfermot, Dublin, was slashed in the face and body in an alleged knife attack at the War Memorial Gardens in Islandbridge at around 10pm on Saturday 30 May 2026, before jumping into the River Liffey to escape and swimming across to the Chapelizod Road side, where he lost consciousness and was later pronounced dead at St James' Hospital on Sunday 31 May. Gardaí suspect Lee McDonnell, a 34-year-old man from Ballyfermot, of slashing Griffin, and the case is being pursued as alleged assault rather than murder, with a postmortem ordered to determine the cause of death. McDonnell was arrested for breaches of bail conditions and became unresponsive in a Dublin Garda station on Saturday, later dying; his death is being investigated by Fiosrú. No decision on a charge had been made by the time McDonnell died.
