Seosamh McGonigle, a 19-year-old man, lost control of his Toyota Corolla at an accident blackspot at Carnashannagh, Burnfoot, Donegal, in July 2015, killing rear-seat passenger John Hegarty, 21, who was not wearing a seat belt. Front-seat passenger Lee McDermott survived the crash. McGonigle pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing death and having no insurance at Letterkenny Circuit Court in May 2018 and was sentenced to 16 months in jail, suspended for two years, with a six-year driving ban. An inquest into Hegarty's death was opened in November 2021 and heard evidence in June 2022. In July 2022, Judge John Aylmer refused McGonigle's application to have his licence restored, finding on the balance of probability that he had been driving while disqualified.
