Oliver Doran, a 24-year-old man, was sentenced to life imprisonment on 8 May 2023 for the murder of Kwok Ping Cheng, a 76-year-old Chinese man, at Robinson's Court on Cork Street, Dublin 8, in April 2021. Doran told gardaí he killed Cheng with an axe he brought from his own home, then fled to Northern Ireland and England before returning on 4 May 2021 and being arrested the following day. He initially pleaded not guilty at the Central Criminal Court but changed his plea to guilty on 17 January 2023, the third day of his trial. Justice David Keane described the killing as senseless with no motive and imposed the mandatory life sentence, backdated to the date of the guilty plea.
