Mark O'Connell, a 38-year-old father of three and community employment scheme worker, was fatally stabbed during an altercation at a property in Hollyville, Hollyhill, Cork city, in the early hours of Sunday 16 November 2025. He was taken to Cork University Hospital where he later died from a single stab wound to the upper thorax. A 55-year-old man was initially arrested at the scene and released without charge on Monday evening, and the investigation was upgraded to murder following postmortem results. Kieran Long, a 56-year-old man of Ardcullen, Hollyhill, was charged with murder at Cork District Court on 7 October 2026 and remanded in custody.
