The attack followed a dispute between two rival Traveller families over a relationship between Stokes' daughter and a Lawrence family member. Stokes, who was wheelchair-bound after a hit-and-run two weeks earlier that left him with disabling injuries, told the court glass went into his eyes during the attack. Judge Bernadette Owens sentenced Lawrence to nine months each for the assault and criminal damage, running concurrently, with the production of a golf club charge taken into consideration.
