  Last January, during the arrest of Kevin O'Keefe at his home on foot of a bench warrant from Dublin Circuit Criminal Court, a black Belgian Shepherd dog known as Theo, Cleo or Deo was accused of biting a garda; O'Keefe disputes the allegation, and his age is not given. A few days later a garda complained under the Control of Dogs Act 1986, the District Court ordered the dog destroyed, and O'Keefe brought a High Court challenge that stayed that order. On 11 August 2023 Mr Justice Garrett Simons ruled that the dog must stay in professional kennel custody until the rehearing, with each side bearing its own costs. On 23 August 2023 the judge refused O'Keefe a stay on the kennelling order, and he is appealing to the Court of Appeal while serving a two-and-a-half-year sentence in Mountjoy Prison.
